• June support group welcomes individuals, families, friends

Free, drop-in group meets Monday, June 4

The drop-in support group, “Give it a Whirl” for Wellness, will meet Monday, June 4, from 6-7 p.m. The free group is for anyone coping with health and wellness challenges and made possible through the collaboration of the Center for Family Life and Recovery and Rome Memorial Hospital’s Mohawk Valley Radiation Medicine.
“Give it a Whirl” for Wellness is a creative way to socialize, help and be helped by others with similar conditions or circumstances, whether it is quitting smoking for good, overcoming illness or treatments, or facing life changes. More than a support group, it gives Individuals, family and friends an opportunity to come together in a welcoming, comfortable, and inspiring way.
“Our informal group is centered around a creative activity,” said Amy Weakley, director of Mohawk Valley Radiation Medicine. “Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you will be encouraged by what you will create during this time of sharing and learning from others.”
The June meetings, led by the Center for Family Life and Recovery, will be held each Monday at Mohawk Valley Radiation Medicine, 107 E. Chestnut St., Rome:
 June 4 , 6-7 p.m.: Make collages that focus on community sites
     June 11, 2-3 p.m.: Leather creations – just in time for Father’s Day
 June 18, 6-7 p.m.: Designing and making inspirational placemats
 June 25, 2-3 p.m.: Healthy outdoor eating without cooking
The public is encouraged to attend any or all of the meetings. No registration is necessary. There is easy access and plenty of parking on the east side of the building.
“Groups like this one provide outlets for anyone in a period of recovery,” explained Kathy Peters, director of marketing and development, Center for Family Life and Recovery. “Recovery can mean any time an individual or family member is learning to cope with an illness, dependency, or a life altering event. It is a time to reach out, encourage and support one another.”

    • Learning from others with similar experiences
    • Improving coping skills
