  •  Rome Memorial Hospital appoints new leaders for therapeutic services and patient safety

Manon Gouse, MS, CCC-SLP, has been appointed assistant vice president of therapeutic services and patient safety officer at Rome Memorial Hospital, announced President/Chief Executive Officer David Lundquist. Formerly the director of rehabilitation therapy services, Gouse has been employed with the hospital since 2007.

The appointment is one of a series of organizational changes that provide a supportive structure that strengthens and aligns the hospital’s efforts to advance quality and foster strategic growth. As part of those changes, Rena Hughes, P.T., M.S., Cert. MDT, has been named the new director of Therapy Services, Lundquist added. Formerly the assistant director, Hughes has been employed with the hospital since 2009.

“Manon is a process-driven leader, who leverages her clinical experience to enhance the delivery of patient care,” Lundquist said. “In her new role, she will provide administrative oversight for therapy services, the Community Recovery Center, the Regional Center for Wound Care, and Mohawk Valley Radiation Medicine.”

“These outpatient services already have a proven record of providing quality physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, treatment for hard to heal wounds, addiction counseling and treatment, and radiation oncology,” Gouse said. “In my new leadership position, I want to work with these service areas to help them meet their potential of providing the best possible care and service right here in Rome.”

Gouse received her bachelor of science degree in hearing and speech sciences and her master of science degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in health care administration through Utica College.

“As patient safety officer,” Lundquist continued, “Manon will foster interdisciplinary collaboration to strengthen our hospital’s culture of safety.”

Gouse said she is excited by the potential of her role as patient safety officer. “The key to accomplishing growth and high quality patient care is interdisciplinary collaboration,” she explained, “I look forward to working with the entire hospital organization as we unite our current efforts to provide a safe environment for everyone.”

As director of therapy services, Hughes said she will continue to build on the work and progress that Gouse has made in advancing and expanding these services, including physical, occupational, speech pathology, lymphedema, vestibular rehabilitation, and therapies for pediatrics. Therapy services are provided at the hospital and at Chestnut Commons Physical and Occupational Therapy, 107 E. Chestnut St., Rome.

“Working with Rena for the past seven years, I have seen her natural leadership skills serve her well as she advanced in her career,” Gouse said. “Even in a leadership role, however; she is a team player who recognizes the contributions of others and works collaboratively to produce the best solutions to any problem.”

Hughes received her bachelor’s degree in health studies and master’s degree in physical therapy from Utica College. She is certified in the McKenzie Method, a specialized protocol for treating neck and back pain.

“In my new role, I plan to expand my knowledge of the portions of the therapy department that did not report to me in the past so that I may be a valuable resource and provide excellent leadership to our staff,” Hughes said. “I am excited by the opportunity to lead our therapy team to further integrate and improve our continuum of therapy services, especially for our patients undergoing total joint replacement.”

Hughes will also have an expanded role in coordinating the hospital’s physician outreach efforts to strengthen collaborative relationships with community physicians to ensure that their patients have easy access to the hospital’s services.
